The Surprising Benefits of a Regular Yoga Practice : Real-Life Stories from Members at Artemis Yoga

In 2022, Artemis members took 13,125 classes collectively – wow! Our unlimited members take an average of 9 classes per month. We interviewed some of our members to hear about their personal yoga journeys at Artemis Yoga.

I’ve been going to Artemis Yoga since January 2023. Being a newcomer to yoga, I didn’t know quite what to expect save the articles I’ve read and anecdotes I’ve heard from friends over the years. The studio was immediately welcoming in terms of physical layout and atmosphere, general vibe, teaching practices, and overall communication.

“I hear people say, ‘yoga is a gift.’ I think it is. It’s made a world of a difference in the past three months for me.”

What is your “why” for practicing yoga?

In the beginning, my initial “why” was that I really wanted to play soccer again and I didn’t want to run or exercise. I wanted to get more flexible and have better core strength. I heard a lot of people talk about yoga over the years. The mindfulness aspect had also been coming up in different parts of my life. The combination of philosophy and exercise seemed like something that would be right up my alley. I’m discovering that each day, there are more and more “whys” that emerge.


How do you typically feel after a yoga class?

A lot of times, I’m very sweaty which feels so good. I feel like my chest is open, I’m breathing deeper, I feel calm and balanced. It feels really good. I feel ready to approach the rest of the day.

What is your favorite yoga class?

I have trouble choosing favorites – I’m going to pick two. I really like Liz Gawel’s Flow class. She calls it “the slow zone”. You just really take your time with each pose and the movements transitioning into each pose which makes you really focus your attention on parts of your body that you may not normally focus on. The slow zone is a fantastic place to be. Another favorite would be Sue Gormley’s Iyengar class. Iyengar Yoga is different – the structure, the props and the use of props. I’m learning a lot about it.


Why do you love Artemis Yoga and how would you describe it to someone new?

Artemis Yoga is a fantastic studio with wonderful teachers and a great community of beginner, intermediate, and advanced yoga practitioners. I would highly recommend it to anyone wherever you are in life, mentally or physically.

There are a lot of different yoga practices and traditions available here, and all sorts of different people and backgrounds. It’s a really friendly atmosphere geared towards people who are curious about their bodies and getting healthier.

All of the yoga philosophies, traditions, styles, and poses that I’ve been exposed to thus far, are presented honestly, effectively, and openly, as far as I can tell being a beginner. The choice is up to us yogis to decide what works for us at any given moment, day, week, or into the future. The teachers are very accommodating, understanding, supportive, and give you the right kinds of nudges, mentally or physically, when you may need, want, or ask for them.


Is there anything you wish you knew before starting yoga?

That yogis and the teachers are very open-minded people – they’re accepting of where you’re at. There is a whole philosophy to make micro-adjustments here and there and that’s how you improve. You have to accept where you’re at in order to move forward. It’s not just applied physically, but mentally too.

Why would you recommend the monthly unlimited membership at Artemis?

I originally started with the Newcomers Two Week Pass for $49 to see what it was all about. The trial period went very well, so I bought the Flexible 4-Pack of 4 classes per month for $75. I then quickly determined into my first month that one class a week was not even close to enough yoga for me given how beneficial it has and continues to be, so without much hesitation I decided to purchase the Monthly Unlimited Pass for $140.

You start to see the benefits and you want more and more. It’s also just so nice to be here. There are some days that I want to take two classes. There’s flexibility so you can add on classes and not worry about extra costs.

I’ve been coming to Artemis Yoga for about two years now and I started coming because I was often visiting friends and family in Watertown and had driven past the studio a million times. One day, I just decided to stop in.

What is your “why” for practicing yoga?

I practice yoga because it’s a creative outlet for me. It’s a great place to be a room full of people but still focus on you. It’s something that you can do wherever you are – it builds that sense of community regardless of where you are.


How do you typically feel after a yoga class?

After a yoga class, I feel really glad to have come. Sometimes it feels like a lot of work to get ready and commute over. But once I’m here I feel totally relaxed, ready to open up to my practice, and it feels really good to have this be a part of my week and something that I can look forward to. 


What is your favorite yoga class?

My favorite yoga class at Artemis and one that I love to describe to friends and try to convince them to come to is the Ropes class. Generally I really like all of the Iyengar classes. It’s not something I’d ever done before coming to Artemis. It’s different and can be a very cool part of your practice.


Why do you love Artemis Yoga and how would you describe it to someone new?

I love Artemis Yoga because it really feel like a community. One of the things that is really different from a lot of other studios I’ve been to is that when you walk in, the people who are working here and the people who are coming to class know your name.

Why would you recommend the monthly unlimited membership at Artemis?

I would recommend the Monthly Unlimited Membership because there are so many different classes to try so it gives you the opportunity to explore and see what works for you. Whether it’s trying new types of yoga or different times of the day or week, it gives you a lot of flexibility. Some days you might want to do a lot of yoga so it’s great because you can go to an Iyengar class or a Flow class and then afterwards, go to a Restorative class. It feels really easy to make that commitment when you have the Unlimited Membership.


Anything else to share?

The other thing I would like to share about Artemis Yoga is that obviously the community is incredible. But also the space is so nice and inviting because of the people but it’s also really clean and there’s a lot of light in here. It feels really calm, clean, and cool.

What is your “why” for practicing yoga?

I have scoliosis so before practicing yoga, I had really bad shoulder tightness and I often had headaches so I wanted to prevent that.


How do you typically feel after a yoga class?

After a yoga class, I feel great and I feel tall! I’m not really a meditation person but I do feel like my mind is really clear.


What is your favorite yoga class?

I love taking Iyengar classes, they’re really great. I especially love Mary Wixted’s class because she has a lot of knowledge about scoliosis.

Why are you a member at Artemis?

When I first saw the price for a monthly pass, I was a little hesitant because it’s not cheap but if you look at the price long-term, it’s really beneficial. It’s actually cheaper for me because one time I needed to go to physical therapy once or twice a week for two months and it ended up costing me a lot more.


How would you describe Artemis to someone new?

Artemis Yoga is really welcoming, everyone is so nice. One thing I really love about this studio is that you can ask questions to the instructors during class.

Accommodation Policy

Artemis Yoga is committed to enable individuals with disabilities to participate as fully as possible in classes at our yoga studio. On the first level there is a wheelchair accessible entrance, yoga class studio and bathroom.
All classes on the first floor are wheelchair accessible in our flagship, primary studio. The lower level studio is reached by two stairways. In the event that a class in the lower level is not accessible to a participant, the studio owner or manager on-premise will adjust that class location to the first floor, grade level studio. With reasonable notice, this change will readily be made as an accommodation.


The request can be made in person, via email or telephone and advance notice of the request to the studio is appreciated. Artemis Yoga will make an earnest effort and attempt to provide reasonable accommodation pending timely notice by participants needing such accommodations.

Artemis Yoga will also work with the individual to ensure that participation in class is achievable. This may include providing additional props, chairs or hands-on assistance that the teacher is able to deliver while continuing to teach the class to all participants.

“HOW TO” GUIDE FOR ONLINE CLASSES

Artemis Yoga offers “live” online yoga classes through Zoom. To join, find an inviting space to practice and follow the steps below:

Step 1: Use your MINDBODY account with Artemis Yoga to register for the class. 

  • Meeting ID in the class description.
  • Please register in advance to streamline attendance and to allow us to send you a recording if you miss the class or join late.
  • Please register even if the class is listed as “free community class.”

Step 2: Log into https://zoom.us/join and enter the Class-Specific Meeting ID then click “Join”.  

  • Meeting ID in the class description. 
  • Start the login process 10-15 minutes before class so that you are ready.
  • We recommend downloading the Zoom client on your computer, laptop, tablet, or phone. You can enter the Meeting ID number from there.

Step 3: Once you click on the Meeting ID, register with your name and email in Zoom. Please use your real name so we can match with Mindbody. You will then be entered in the “Waiting Room.” 

  • The Waiting Room is where Artemis Staff checks attendance. If we can’t identify you from your Zoom user name, you will not be let into class. 
  • You will be asked if you registered in Mindbody, if you had trouble doing so, please click “No” and stay in the Waiting Room, we will assist you after class. 
  • We start letting people in from the Waiting Room 15 minutes prior to class. Large classes take a bit for us to check everyone in, please be patient.

Step 4: When let in from the waiting room, click “Join with Computer Audio.” 

  • We mute participants during class but you may unmute yourself at any time to ask questions or to say hello! We like to see you and greet you, though you may choose to turn your camera off. 
  • Use “Chat” to communicate if you do not want to speak out loud. 
  • Zoom prompts for consent to be in a recorded class, please accept so you may continue to be in class. Note that the recording is set to record only the teacher who is in the spotlight. Recordings are sent to registrants who are absent.
